Our Top 10 Tips for dog photography
Use Natural Light: Aim for natural light by photographing your dog near windows or outdoors. Natural light provides a softer, more flattering look and avoids harsh shadows. Early morning or late afternoon light is often best for a warm, even tone.
Choose a Clean Background: Select a simple, uncluttered background to keep the focus on your dog. A plain wall or a tidy area of your home ensures that your dog stands out without distractions from busy patterns or objects. Or use blur to keep focus on your pooch!
Get on Their Level: To capture more engaging and authentic images, crouch or lie down to shoot at your dog’s eye level. This perspective makes the photo feel more personal and allows you to capture their expression more naturally.
Capture Movement: To prevent motion blur, especially with active dogs, use a fast shutter speed. This setting freezes the action, capturing sharp images of your dog in mid-play or during a spontaneous moment.
Focus on the Eyes: The eyes are the most expressive part of a dog’s face. Ensure the camera focuses on your dog’s eyes to convey emotion and connection in the photo. A sharp focus on the eyes will bring the photo to life.
Incorporate Treats and Toys: Use treats or favourite toys to capture your dog’s attention and elicit natural expressions. Hold the treat or toy near the camera to get your dog looking directly at you, which can help in getting the perfect shot.
Dynamic Shots: Try different angles to find the most flattering view of your dog. Shoot from above for a playful perspective or from below for a regal and dramatic look. Changing angles can add variety and interest to your photos.
Capture Action: Enable burst mode on your camera or phone to take multiple shots in quick succession. This is useful for capturing fast movements or unpredictable moments, ensuring you get the perfect shot amidst the action.
Post-Processing: Use photo editing apps to adjust brightness, contrast, and sharpness. Cropping out distractions and enhancing colours can significantly improve the final image. Basic edits can turn a good photo into a great one.
Enjoy the Process: Keep the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable for your dog. Patience is key; if your dog isn’t cooperating, take breaks and try again later. The more fun and relaxed the session, the better the photos will turn out.
From the experts: Keep practising to improve your dog photography skills. Over time, you’ll become more adept at capturing those perfect moments, and your dog will become more accustomed to posing for the camera. Regular practice helps refine your techniques and results in even better photos.
